For the purpose of European registration this number serves as a unique identifier for a company or person, resident or assessed for taxation in the European Union and carrying out customs-relevant activities.

If your museum, gallery or company imports from a non-EU country (e.g. Switzerland, USA), exports to a non-EU country or undertakes customs clearance then you will need an EORI number.
